World day of remembrance for road traffic victims

On 26 October 2005, the United Nations adopted a resolution which calls for governments to mark the third Sunday in November each year as World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

Every year, an estimated 1.3 million people lose their lives and at least 50 million people are injured as a result of road accidents. Each year 260 000 children die in road accidents and more than one million are seriously injured, very frequently with permanent disability. The startling reality is that every day more than 3400 people die on road accidents, including 1000 children and young people.


The situation in the Republic of Macedonia in the first nine months of 2008 and 2009 is as follows:

Republic of Macedonian through the National Council for road safety (NCRD) for the first time this year will mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.


The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims will be marked on 15 November 2009 from 11:00 to 13:00 o’clock at the square Macedonia in the centre of Skopje.

 

The activities planned within the marking of the day will be organized by the National Council for road safety in cooperation with different partners, such the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Health, Institute for Public Health (IPH), World Health Organization (WHO), Centre for Crisis Management (CCM), Commission for relations with religious communities Macedonian Red Cross and АМСМ.


Macedonian Red Cross traditionally organizes numerous activities linked with road safety s a partner to governmental and non-governmental organizations. The educational and information material is targeted for raising  public awareness on safe behavior of all participants in the traffic as well as provision of first aid training for the future drivers to assist injured people in case of traffic accidents as one of the chains for enhancing pre-hospital care and improvement of the chances for survival of injured persons. Macedonian Red Cross as a member of the International federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, is part of the Global Road Safety Partnership (Global Road Safety Partnership).


On the occasion of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, Macedonian Red Cross and the City Red Cross of Skopje will distribute information material in the area of road safety, and will organize a simulation exercise with involvement of numerous participants in the traffic (pedestrians, drivers of cars, bicycle riders and bikers) with realistic presentation of wounds and administration of first aid which will be provided by the first aid teams of Macedonian Red Cross. After first aid is administered the ambulance service will be alerted and they are expected to came with a professional team which would continue the care for the injured persons. The realistic presentation of wounds will be organized on three locations with involvement of bystanders, to learn some of the first aid techniques.
